Tension Wound Fin Tubes

 

The Tension Wound Fin means the fins wrapped tightly around the tube and welded or stapled at the ends of tubes to hold the form. Tension Wound Fins can also be solder-coated to strength the corrosion resistance. Tension wound fin works especially prefer with fins and tubes that are use the same material.

Common Applications:HVAC Coils.

"L" Footed Fin tubes

"L" Footed Fin has a lip at the base which is tension wound around the tube. This increases the connected area and increases the heat transfer connect area between the fin and the tube and decreases the exposed joints at the fin base. 

Common Applications:  Steam Coils, HVAC Coils.

Max. Working Temperature:  150 °C

Atmospheric Corrorsion Resisitance: OK

Mechanical Resistance: Poor

Fin Material: Copper, Aluminum

Base Tube materials: Any material available, such as Carbon steel Tube, A179, A192, A210, stainless tube A269/A213 T5 T11 T22 304 316

"LL" type fin tubes also called Overlapped "L" Fin tubes

The Overlapped "L" fin design has interlocking fins that are wound together to prevent movement and separation. The fin protects the entire tubes, so the designation works well for the applications where corrosion is a factor.

This type of finned tube is often used as an alternative to the more expensive extruded type fin in corrosive environments.

Common Applications: Steam Coils, Air Preheaters.

Max. Working Temperature:  180 °C

Atmospheric Corrorsion Resisitance: OK

Mechanical Resistance: Poor

Fin Material: Copper, Aluminum

Base Tube materials: Any material available, such as Carbon steel Tube, A179, A192, A210, stainless tube A269/A213 T5 T11 T22 304 316

KL fin tubes also named knurled finned tubes

Manufactured method is exactly as the 'L' finned tube except that the base tubes are knurled before application of these fin foot. After application, the fin foot is knurled into the corresponding knurling on the base tube thereby enhancing the bond between the fin and tube, resulting in improved heat transfer characteristics.

Max. Working Temperature:  260 °C

Atmospheric Corrorsion Resisitance: OK

Mechanical Resistance: Poor

Fin Material: Copper, Aluminum

L-Foot Wound Fin Tube

Manufacturing process:  The fin strip (normally aluminum and copper) is folded into an L Foot and wound onto the base tube surface under tension. The feet of the fins are joined together and cover the finned surface.

Surface Protection

Both bare ends shall be Zinc or Aluminum metalized applied by an electro spray arc system coating.

Acceptance Criteria

API Standard 661(Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers for General Refinery Service) or the delivery conditions (TDC).

Accessories

Tube Support Box, Clamp or Spacer Box (Material: Aluminum, Zinc and Stainless Steel).

Delivery Condition

Tube ends are square cut, free burrs, internally dried and air blown clean, externally coated with varnish at both ends of L Type Tension Wound Finned Tube.

 Packing: 

The desiccants are put into each package for continental transportation as well.

Standard Met︰L-Foot Tension Wound Finned Tubes also called Wrap-On Finned Tubes, which used in applications where temperatures lower than 300 degrees Fahrenheit. In other words L fin tubes mainly used in low-temperature application where some degree of tube wall protection is needed. L-Foot tension wound fin tubes consist of two parts, aluminum fin and base tube. The thin aluminium fin strips tightly wound helically around the base tube circumference. A foot is first formed at one side of the fin strip (Called the name L foot). The strip is then wound tightly around the tube, with the foot bearing on the tube's outer surface. These short horizontal limb of each L are in full contact with the base-tube surface to cover it completely. While Tension in the fin strip as it is wrapped around the tubes serves as seat the fin foot forcefully on the tube, and then to hold the fin firmly in place. L-footed finned tubings offer maximum heat transfer at lower temperatures circumference. The unique L-shaped design holds fins rigidly to withstand heat cycling and high velocity air vibration. These fins offer a certain degree of atmospheric protection of the tube wall anti corrosion. The broad contact surface between the tube and the finning enhances heat transfer. This fin design is highly efficient and cost effective.




The ends of the fins have to be stapled to prohibit the aluminium fin from unravelling or loosing the contact between the fin foot and the base tube. This contact is critical to the operation of the air coolers, since the heat is transferred from the tube wall, through the fin, to the surrounding hot air.




L Finned Tubes Advantages:




Suitable for using in low-temperature application
This kind of finning type is the most cost effective way compared to the others.
The failed fins could easily removed during production and bare tubes can be used again for finning.
There is no need to make a helical grove over the core tube.
It is possible to place the fins on a super thin-walled tube with is particularly desirable when using expensive alloys as core tubes.
The tubes can withstand a temperature of up to 130°C without the risk of atmospheric corrosion or thermal stress.



L Finned Tubes Weakness:




The fins are not so strong to resist mechanical damage when external forces applied on fin area
Handling shall be careful done with care to avoid any damage.
Finned tubes may be damaged when using either steam or high-pressure water for cleaning
As the fins are helically wrapped in grooves, un-finned area is not covered which can be exposed to corrosive media and galvanic corrosion at the base of the fins can be accrued
Tubes shall be very straight with smooth out side area to make good finned tubes
Fins should be fixed at both ends in order to avoid un-wrapping
